Google Drive Introduces Gemini-Powered Audio Summaries for PDFs
  • New Gemini feature turns lengthy PDFs into podcast-style audio overviews
  • Users can listen to summaries directly in Drive or access them later via synced folders
  • Available for Google Workspace and Google One AI Pro subscribers

Google has rolled out a new Gemini-powered Audio Overview feature for Google Drive, allowing users to listen to podcast-style summaries of PDF documents. The update builds on similar capabilities seen in NotebookLM and Google Search, making it easier to digest long or complex files without reading them line by line.

Within the Drive PDF viewer on the web, users will notice a new Audio Overview button in the toolbar. When selected, Gemini automatically generates a spoken summary lasting between two and ten minutes, depending on the document’s size and content. The finished audio can be played instantly from the Gemini side panel or revisited later in a new “Audio overviews” folder, which syncs seamlessly across desktop and mobile devices.

The feature aims to help professionals, researchers, and students quickly absorb dense information from reports, contracts, or academic papers. Using Gemini’s advanced language model, it converts key insights into natural, conversational narration for easier understanding.

Users receive an email notification once an audio file is ready, making it convenient to review or share. Currently, Audio Overviews support only English, but Google plans to expand to more languages soon.

The feature is being rolled out this week for Google Workspace Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google One AI Pro and AI Ultra users. Combined with Google Docs’ “Listen” feature, this launch strengthens Google’s move toward a more AI-powered, conversational workspace experience.
