Google Expands Gemini Deep Research to Scan Gmail, Drive, Chat
- Gemini Deep Research now scans Gmail, Drive, and Chat for detailed AI-generated reports.
- Feature supports cross-source analysis combining internal data and web results.
- New error recovery system prevents full session restarts during failures.
Google has rolled out a major upgrade to its Gemini Deep Research tool, enabling it to analyze content from Gmail, Google Drive, and Chat alongside web data. The expansion allows Gemini to generate more comprehensive, personalized research reports, blending users’ personal files with online information.
The new capability starts rolling out on desktop today and will reach mobile users soon. By tapping into multiple data sources, emails, documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and chat logs. Gemini can now deliver in-depth, context-rich insights for both personal and professional use.
Users can access the feature by selecting 'Deep Research' under the Tools menu on Gemini’s desktop interface. From there, they can choose the data sources Search, Gmail, Drive, or Chat and let Gemini autonomously design and execute a multi-step research plan. The results can then be exported as Google Docs or even converted into AI-generated podcasts.

The update also introduces an error recovery system, ensuring that if one part of the research process fails, the session continues without restarting. With its million-token context window and asynchronous operation, Gemini can process large volumes of data while users stay offline and receive a notification when the report is ready.
Launched in late 2024, Deep Research has evolved through several upgrades, and this latest version marks its most powerful yet—blending AI, automation, and workspace integration to transform how users conduct research.
