6. Megascale Desalination

Concept: Supplies of fresh water to meet the needs of a growing population.

Availability: Launched

Built for the Israeli government by Israel Desalination Enterprises, or IDE Technologies, at a cost of around $500 million, it uses a conventional desalination technology called reverse osmosis to provide water to those who don’t get supply of it. In 10 years the number of people having access to water is expected to reach 1.8billion. The new plant in Israel, called Sorek, was constructed in 2013. Desalinated seawater is now a mainstay of the Israeli water supply. Its energy consumption is among the lowest in the world for large-scale desalination plants.

7. Apple Pay

Concept: Your smart phone and wallet together.

Availability: Launched

Apple Pay is a digital wallet service by Apple Inc. It lets users to make payments using their iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch. Apple Pay does not require Apple-specific contactless payment terminals and will work with Visa's PayWave, MasterCard's PayPass, and American ExpressPay terminals. The service has begun initially only in U.S., but will come out worldwide soon. It aims to digitize and replace the credit or debit card transactions. Apple CEO Tim Cook announced that more than 1 million credit cards have been registered on Apple Pay in the first 3 days of its availability. It is the world’s largest mobile payment system as of yet.
