Snapchat Introduces Paid Storage Plans for Memories

Snapchat Introduces Paid Storage Plans for Memories
  • Snapchat now caps free Memories storage at 5GB
  • New paid subscription tiers offer up to 5TB of space
  • One year grace period for users over the limit

Snapchat is changing how users store their Snaps, officially capping free Memories storage at 5GB. After reaching that limit, users must subscribe to a paid storage plan to save more content. This marks a major shift from the platform’s once-unlimited Memories feature that has stored over a trillion Snaps since 2016.

To address storage needs, Snap introduced new Memories Storage Plans. The base tier offers 100GB for $1.99/month, while Snapchat+ users (currently paying $3.99/month) will automatically get 250GB. For those with extensive Snap collections, the Platinum plan provides 5TB for $15.99/month.

Snap said most users won’t be affected, as the majority fall under the 5GB limit. However, for users already over the cap, the company is offering a one-year grace period. During this time, excess content will be stored temporarily, giving users time to upgrade or manage their data.

This move signals Snapchat’s broader shift toward revenue diversification beyond ads. It follows the August launch of Lens+, a $9/month subscription offering exclusive AR effects. With this update, Snap joins the ranks of Google and Apple, both of which already monetize cloud storage.

For everyday users, the change may not matter much. But for heavy users treating Snapchat as a photo archive, the message is clear: either clear out old Snaps or pay to keep them safe.
