Threads Experiments with User-Controlled Feed Algorithm

- Threads is testing a feature to let users influence their feed algorithm
- Users may tag a special account to signal content preferences
- Move mirrors personalization trends at X and Instagram
Instagram is quietly working on a new feature for its Threads app that could give users more control over the algorithm that shapes their feed. The experimental tool, currently being tested internally, would allow users to tag a dedicated account @threads.algo, to tell the platform what kind of content they want to see more or less of.
The feature was first spotted by reverse engineer Alessandro Paluzzi and later confirmed by Meta as a prototype under internal development. While it's not available to the public yet, the project reflects Meta’s broader focus on personalization across its platforms, including Instagram.
This idea is in line with what other platforms are doing. Elon Musk recently revealed a similar feature for X (formerly Twitter), where users could interact with its Grok AI chatbot to fine tune their feed. Musk even claimed that by November, X’s algorithm would be 'purely AI-driven'.
Instagram is also revamping its own algorithm strategy. Its head, Adam Mosseri, recently previewed an update that will allow users to select or search for topics they’re more interested in, directly from the top of their feed. The company has already introduced some control features like Following and Favorites feeds in 2022, and added a Following feed on Threads in 2023.

These shifts come as tech companies respond to public pressure and regulatory scrutiny over how algorithms impact users—especially young audiences. The rise of open-source social networks like Bluesky, which let users choose their own algorithms, is pushing the industry toward greater transparency and customization.
