 #9.A Very Young Global Crime Ring Nearly Steals Over $200 Million

The FBI estimates that they have prevented more than $205 million fraudulent transactions and alerted card issuers for over 411,000 compromised credit and debit cards. Through the intelligence gained during its investigation, it also notified that 47 companies, government organizations, and educational institutions had been compromised. The oldest high profile member of this ring was only 22 years old with other high profile members being teenagers. One of the youngest members, Mir Islam, was discovered to also be a member of a huge credit card hacking ring known as UGNazi.

#10.Heartland Payment Systems Hack

On January 20, 2009, Heartland Payment Systems had been the victim of a security breach. The data which was stolen included the digital information encoded onto the magnetic stripe, built into the backs of credit and debit cards. With this data, thieves can forge credit cards by imprinting the same stolen information onto fabricated cards. The ringleader of this operation was Albert Gonzalez, the same man responsible for the TJX breach.
