Technology Creates New Sources of Power
The Power of Demographics:
Advances in health care and birth control technologies have virtually shifted the course of economy. Naturally because, for example in developed countries, increase in life expectancy, combined with lower birth rates create huge shifts in worker to retiree ratios. Studies also find that demographic trends created by high fertility in less developed nations contribute largely to extremism-Needless to explain why.
Here again we can cite the example of Ukraine which witnessed a drift in demands as against previous revolutions. In the Orange Revolution ten years ago, Eastern Ukraine was united behind Viktor Yanukovych, who was the then Russian backed candidate for President. Whereas now, there is a decisive split between the older generations who crave for its lost Soviet power and the younger generation who want no memory of it at all.
Likewis, enterprises also have to struggle with changing demographics, as they have to keep up with the changing demands. Facebook faced the same. When it first started, it was only available to those with college e-mails. It then moved to high schools and then to everybody like we see today. Though this strategy was a roaring success, the company soon found that as its user base aged and eventually lost credibility with younger demographics.
That’s when Instagram and Whatsapp made their appearance in the market and it is clear that they are a huge hit. They rightly appealed to the younger demographics at the right time.
