BENGALURU: Endorsing the Make in India campaign, Tata Motors subsidiary, TAL Manufacturing Solutions would launch India’s first indigenously made articulated robot.  Premiering the prototype at the ongoing Make in India Mumbai Week, February 2015, the Tata Brabo class of robots would be available in the markets in the following couple of months. Headed by COO Anil Bhingurde, the robot has been developed by a team of six engineers. Ironically, the average age of the team amounts to 24 years, an ideal scenario where by Young Indians are Mak-ing it in India. “The idea is to drive automation in the market by offering affordable and cost-effective solution," says Bhingurde. 

Recollecting his memories, where in 2014, a prototype robot literally adorned Ravikant, the chairman, with a garland welcoming him and the board members to the presentation of the company’s venture into robotics. The robot was the primitive prototype of the now fully fledged Brabo. “There's a market of approximately 1,000 big robots in India annually, according to International Federation of Robotics, and from next year, the demand will be 5,000 robots, globally. The market is likely to grow 10 times in five years to 15,000, adds Bhingurde.

From conceptualization to delivering the end model, the entire project was undertaken in collaboration with the various wings that comprise Tata’s business empire. The design of the robot was done in-house at TAL, styling was done at Tata Elxi, and manufacturing of some parts at Tata AutoComp, while Tata Capital provided the finance. The development cost is estimated to be 10 crores.
