Rumours Abound Of Apple Relaunching iPod Line
BANGALORE: Rumors abound that Apple is looking to update its dormant iPod line. The line has seen declining sales since 2008, compared to the iPhone and iPad lines. The rumors started off in the Apple Insider forums, but there is no official confirmation from the company yet. The most recent rumors had details attached about the design and functionality of the iPod.
The source said the company plans to update its touch screen-based model. When it is released later this year, when the new iPod is released, it will come with some of the parts that are being used in iPhones, the source added. The chip being used on the latest iPod, the iPod Touch is the A5, which is the best chip that Apple had in 2012. The most recent rumor suggests that Apple will use the A6 chip or choose to go with the newer 64-bit A7 chip. The source said that the upcoming model will also have a larger 4 inch screen.
It is not certain if Apple will manage to turn around iPod sales with the new model. The last time the company released iPod sales figures was in 2014, when the company stated that 2.6 million devices had been sold in the fourth quarter of the financial year. This number is well behind the sales figures for iPhones and iPads, but there are many signs that the iPod division is about to experience a resurgence.
Apple watchers point to the purchase of Beats, a high-quality headphone manufacturer. Analysts speculate that that the acquisition was done to bring the top ranked headphone and audio player technology into one product line, that is, to integrate it into the iPod.
Along with the improvements in processing power brought by the new chips, the next iPod Touch is expected to update its storage features to up to 128 GB, as well as its camera to 5 megapixels to better serve its FaceTime application.
