Husk Power

This Bihar based startup company brings in power to many rural households using a cost effective technology. CEO Gyanesh Pandey, an electrical engineer graduated from Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi  generates electricity using a biomass gasifier that creates fuel from rice husks and the unused detritus of rice acts as the major input. Husk Power Systems serves 150,000 people through its 60 systems in villages of Bihar, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu. They generate 35 to 100 kilowatts of power using "mini power-plants" that provide 8-hour of lighting mainly in the evening.

Available in Punjabi villages, this geyser uses contraption of galvanized plain sheet that uses cow dung as fuel to bring boiling water. Invented 15-years ago in a small workshop in Jagraon (Ludhiana), designer Paramajit Singh claims, “I have been challenging people about my geyser that can give hot water in 300 seconds'.

Refrigerator without power

Can you imagine a fridge made of bricks, cement and coarse sand? The Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur, has done it. The mechanism is based on evaporation where the temperature inside is 12-15 degrees lower than room temperature, while humidity is higher by 85pct. This was aimed to meet the problem of preserving fruits and vegetables in the scorching heat of Rajasthan. The 'fridge' can preserve 30kg-50 kg of vegetables for 4-5 days in summer and 6-7 days in winter.
