OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas to Challenge Google Chrome
  • OpenAI unveils ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser with built-in chatbot features.
  • Atlas rolls out first on macOS, coming soon to Windows, iOS, and Android.
  • It includes 'agent mode' for automating online tasks, available to paid users.

OpenAI has officially stepped into the browser wars with the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, a new AI-powered browser designed to change how people search and work online. The company announced the release on Tuesday, calling it a major move to rival Google Chrome.

ChatGPT Atlas debuts first on macOS, with support for Windows, iOS, and Android coming soon. Unlike other browsers, Atlas uses the power of ChatGPT to let users chat directly with search results, making online research and browsing smoother and more interactive.

One standout feature is the sidecar panel, where ChatGPT stays open alongside your active web page. This removes the need to constantly copy and paste information, as the chatbot automatically understands the context of what’s on screen.

Another key feature is browser history tracking, which helps personalize ChatGPT's answers based on the websites you visit and what you do online. OpenAI’s team says this will make your browsing more efficient and relevant.

For more advanced users, agent mode is a game-changer. It allows ChatGPT to complete small web tasks on your behalf, like filling out forms or gathering info though this feature is only available for Plus, Pro, and Business subscribers at launch.

OpenAI says Atlas is not just a browser, but a step toward reimagining how we use the internet. Whether it can seriously challenge Chrome’s 3 billion users remains to be seen, but it’s a bold new entry in the AI browser space.
