OpenAI Joins IndiaAI Mission with Vaishnaw and Altman on Board

In a major development for India's tech ecosystem, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, is set to open its first office in the country later this year. The announcement was welcomed by Union IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who said India is uniquely positioned to lead the next wave of AI driven transformation.
The move comes as part of the government’s IndiaAI Mission, which aims to make artificial intelligence accessible, inclusive, and trustworthy. Launched earlier this year, the mission focuses on building a strong AI infrastructure, supporting homegrown foundational models, and encouraging startups and research institutions.
Vaishnaw said in a post on X, “We are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI. We welcome OpenAI’s partnership in ensuring AI benefits reach every citizen”.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, also shared that he will be visiting India next month, adding that AI adoption in India has been “amazing to watch,” with ChatGPT users growing 4x over the past year.

India is also gearing up to host the AI Impact Summit in February 2026. The summit is expected to bring together global leaders in AI to discuss how AI can be made more accessible and impactful across sectors.
With OpenAI stepping into the Indian market, experts believe this will accelerate innovation and help build AI solutions tailored to India’s unique needs.
