Intriguing Technology Trends Exhibited at Mobile World Congress 2016


BENGALURU: If you absolutely go crazy over the newest gadgets and mobile phones, Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona should have been your ideal place. The 2016 edition of MWC saw the emergence of next-gen mobile devices and related technologies, which pretty much set the trend for the remaining part of the year. The halls of MWC were filled by roughly about a lakh people, distributed in around 2,200 different booths showcasing an interesting blend of gadgets and technologies, including virtual-reality headsets, smartphones, tablets, wearables, accessories, and apps. With that being said, let’s glance through some of these technologies that took the center-stage at MWC 2016, as observed by Nandagopal Rajan for an India Express article.

4G+ & 5G

Several demonstrations were offered by equipment makers and telecom operators of the benefits new network will feature viz. lower latency, or reaction times. However, there was no announcement regarding the roll out of ultra-fast 5G networks. The plans revolve around introducing prototypes as early as 2018, with full-fledged incorporation being possible only in 2020. Xiaomi Mi 5 was one of the sidelines to be featured at MWC 2016. Vice President Hugo Barra clearly pointed out in a statement that the smartphone was 4G+ enabled, or LTE advanced depending on the region you’re at again. Mi5 leverages 4G+ technology which can combine bands to offer speeds of around 600mbps.
