India to Launch Centre of Excellence in Quantum and 6G Technologies
India is making strides in quantum and 6G technologies with a new Centre of Excellence (CoE) being set up in Karnataka. The initiative, a collaboration between the Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE) India and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), is part of the Ministry of Communications' 100-day programme aimed at boosting innovation in these cutting-edge fields.
The CoE will be based at VTU's Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF) in Bangalore and will focus on driving advancements in quantum technology and related areas. Operating under a hub-and-spoke model, the centre will tap into the intellectual and infrastructural strengths of VTU's 228 affiliated colleges, encouraging collaboration and fostering rapid innovation in quantum and 5G/6G technologies.
This new hub will bring together expert groups focused on specific areas of innovation and work closely with organisations such as the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), Bharat 6G Alliance, and TSDSI, as well as academic networks and the startup ecosystem.
With over 400,000 students, 2,000 PhDs, and many researchers across VTU's network, the CoE will play a critical role in accelerating research, innovation, and commercialisation of breakthrough technologies.
Ajai Chowdhury, Chairman of the Mission Governing Board for the National Quantum Mission, highlighted that India currently has around 600 scientists and 50 startups dedicated to quantum technology. The National Quantum Mission, launched in April 2023, aims to build the country's capabilities in quantum science and technology, with significant progress already underway.
The CoE is poised to enhance India's leadership in the global quantum and 6G sectors, driving the country’s future growth in these transformative technologies.
