Google's Gemini AI Grows to 350M Users, Trails ChatGPT and Meta AI in Popularity

Google's top AI chatbot app Gemini seems to have seen strong user expansion over the past year, with more than 350 million or 35 crore users worldwide as of March 2025.

The information was disclosed during the current Google Search antitrust trial, in which a US federal court is pondering suggested solutions to Google's monopolization of the search space. The technology giant's AI app last month had more than 35 million daily active users, reflecting the adoption of Google's AI services, as Gemini reportedly had nine daily active users in October 2024.

The mass adoption by consumers of Gemini might be due to Google's gradual rollout of the AI chatbot to Samsung phones, Google Workspace apps, and Chrome. It has also come out with Gemini 2.0 and 2.5 models since last year. These AI models are reported to be demonstrably huge upgrades over Google's earlier Gemini models.

However, Gemini might still have to play catch up as its estimates of traffic to OpenAI’s ChatGPT is roughly 600 MAUs in March this year, while Meta AI’s MAU count is around 500 million MAUs.

A year ago, US Judge Amit Mehta had decided Google's search engine is an illegal monopoly. The three-week hearing in the case this month is regarding what damages Google needs to pay and how bad the penalties on the company need to be.

The trial testimony has disclosed that Google gives Samsung huge sums of money for a contract to have its Gemini AI chatbot pre-installed on phones produced by the South Korean electronics giant, as reported by Bloomberg.

As part of the two-year Gemini agreement, Google is to provide Samsung with a share of its ad revenue generated from the AI app as well as fixed monthly payments, the report added. Internal slides presented in court also indicate that Google "was considering more restrictive distribution agreements that would have required partners to preinstall Gemini alongside Search and Chrome", The Information reported.
