Google to Launch Its First AI-Driven Smart Glasses in 2026
  • Google to debut its first AI glasses in 2026, marking its big return to the smart wearables market
  • Two versions planned, audio-only and in-lens display, offering hands-free AI access and real-time visual information
  • Aimed at challenging Meta’s rapid lead in AI wearables, especially the popular Ray-Ban Meta lineup

Google is preparing to re-enter the smart glasses market with a major push into AI-powered wearables. The company announced that its first set of AI glasses will launch in 2026, signaling a renewed attempt to take on Meta, whose Ray-Ban Meta glasses have quickly become the category leader.

Google is working with Samsung, Gentle Monster and Warby Parker on the hardware design. Warby Parker has already confirmed a 2026 release in its regulatory filings. The collaboration builds on Google’s $150 million strategic commitment to Warby Parker earlier this year.

The company plans to introduce two types of products. The first is audio-only glasses that allow users to talk to the Gemini AI assistant hands-free. The second is a more advanced version with an in-lens display that can show navigation, translations and real-time information. The first display-enabled models are expected next year, though Google has not revealed which design will launch first.

All glasses will run on Android XR, Google’s operating system for mixed-reality and headset devices. The move reflects Google’s broader strategy to unify its work across AI, AR, and XR after years of scattered efforts, including the early Google Glass project.

Google’s renewed focus comes as improvements in on-device AI and better manufacturing partnerships make the technology more practical and affordable. Sergey Brin previously said earlier attempts struggled because the tech wasn’t ready and production costs were too high.

The competitive landscape is tougher now. Meta dominates the category with its Ray-Ban collaboration, which already includes display features like message previews and live captions. Snap and Alibaba are also building their own versions as the market expands.

Google additionally announced new software features for the Galaxy XR headset, including PC linking and a travel mode for use in cars and airplanes.
