Google Play Store to Add AI-Powered Review Summaries
- Google introduces AI-generated summaries to make app reviews easier to read.
- The feature uses Gemini AI to highlight key app strengths and weaknesses.
- Users can explore specific feedback on performance, UI, or features via clickable themes.
Google is rolling out a new AI feature on the Play Store that automatically summarizes app reviews, helping users make faster download decisions. Powered by Google’s Gemini AI model, the update provides concise overviews of an app’s strengths, weaknesses, and overall user sentiment, reducing the need to scroll through hundreds of individual reviews.
First spotted in Play Store version 48.5.23-31, the feature is being gradually rolled out and may not yet be available to all users. Once active, the summaries will appear under the 'Ratings and reviews' section with a 'Users are saying' heading and a disclaimer stating “Summarised by Google AI.” Users can also dive deeper into specific themes, such as user interface, performance, or file management, via clickable 'chips' under the summary.
The Play Store update follows similar AI initiatives by Apple’s App Store and Amazon, which have been offering automated review summaries to improve user experience. Google, however, has faced challenges with its AI products in the past. Its Search Generative Experience in 2024 and Bard chatbot in 2023 drew criticism for producing inaccurate and sometimes bizarre results.
