Google Expands AI Mode Search to the UK After US and India Launches
  • Google rolls out AI Mode in the UK, offering users a conversational, interactive search experience powered by its Gemini 2.5 model.
  • The feature enables multi-layered, natural queries, and supports text, voice, and image inputs for real-time, personalized information discovery.
  • Designed for exploratory and complex searches, AI Mode aims to shift search from keyword-based results to a context-aware digital assistant experience.

Google has started rolling out its AI-based search experience, AI Mode, to UK users, following previous launches in the US and India. In a blog post, the company stated that UK users would now begin to see AI Mode show up as a standalone tab on their Search results page as well as in the Google app for both Android and iOS devices.

AI Mode provides a more conversational, interactive experience akin to that which users may enjoy in the Gemini app. Based on a tailored version of Google's newest Gemini 2.5 model, the feature enables users to pose sophisticated and multi-layered questions that otherwise would have necessitated multiple distinct searches. Through this functionality, Google hopes to make information discovery more natural and personalized.

According to the company, AI Mode is especially useful for exploratory queries or more nuanced tasks such as planning a trip, comparing products, or understanding intricate topics. For instance, users can ask detailed questions like, 'Things to do in Edinburgh this weekend with friends. We’re big foodies who like music but also chill vibes and exploring off the beaten track', and get tailored, context-rich answers.

The AI can also respond to abstract or scientific questions such as 'How do migrating birds know where to go, informative, bite-sized answers that simplify the search process'? One major leap in AI Mode is that it has a multimodal architecture through which users can interact with Google Search not only with text but also voice and images. By activating the microphone icon, users can dictate their queries instead of typing. They can take a photo or upload an image to find information or pose related questions, making it simpler to discover the world in a more authentic, real-time manner.

This launch represents a key milestone in Google's continued mission to transform search from a keyword-oriented utility to a conversational aide that can grasp context, tastes, and various types of input. With AI Mode now available in the UK, more people will be able to experience this enriched search experience that fills the gap between static browsing and active, AI-driven exploration.
