Google Activates Emergency Location Service on Android in Uttar Pradesh
- Emergency Location Service (ELS) now live in Uttar Pradesh
- Automatically shares caller location with 112 during emergencies
- Uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile networks for precise location
Google has rolled out its Emergency Location Service (ELS) on Android devices in India, starting with Uttar Pradesh, aiming to improve emergency response times. The feature automatically shares a caller’s precise location with 112 emergency services, helping first responders reach people faster even if callers are panicked, injured, or struggling with poor network connectivity.
Built into Android, ELS uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile network signals to pinpoint locations with up to 50 meters accuracy. It can also provide additional details, like device language, to give responders better context. The service activates only during emergency calls or SMS and requires no additional app or hardware. Google ensures privacy by sending data directly to emergency services without storing it.
Uttar Pradesh is the first state to fully implement ELS, integrating it with the state’s 112 system with support from Pert Telecom Solutions. During pilot testing, ELS helped identify locations for over 20 million emergency calls and messages, including situations where calls were disconnected shortly after dialing.

Android’s machine-learning powered fused location system enables ELS to function effectively across varied environments, whether in busy cities, moving vehicles, or remote areas. Google plans to expand ELS to more Indian states in the coming months, strengthening the country’s emergency response infrastructure.
By providing accurate and instant location data, ELS is set to be a critical tool in saving lives and enhancing public safety across India.
