ChatGPT Gets Smarter with New Speed and Personalisation Controls
  • OpenAI adds response speed control to ChatGPT.
  • Users can choose from multiple thinking modes.
  • New personalisation page combines key settings.

OpenAI has rolled out a significant update to ChatGPT, giving premium users greater control over how the AI responds to their queries. The new feature, called ‘Thinking mode’, allows users to adjust the response time and depth based on their preferences. This move aims to enhance user experience by offering flexibility between speed and detail, especially for those using the tool in time sensitive or complex scenarios.

Until now, users had no control over how long it took ChatGPT to respond, with the default ‘Extended’ mode often producing slow but detailed replies. With the latest update, ChatGPT Plus and Business users can now choose between ‘Standard’, which offers a balance between speed and intelligence, and ‘Extended’ for deeper, more thoughtful responses. ChatGPT Pro users will have access to two additional modes, ‘Light’ for quick, surface level answers, and ‘Heavy’, which focuses on highly detailed responses that may take more time to generate.

This update is currently available only to web users. OpenAI has not yet confirmed when the feature will be rolled out for mobile platforms like iOS or Android. Once users select a preferred speed mode, the setting will remain active across future conversations tied to their account.

In addition to speed controls, OpenAI has also redesigned the personalisation page within ChatGPT. This new hub consolidates features such as memory settings, custom instructions, and user personas. Users can now choose from five different personalities Default, Cynical, Robot, Listener, and Nerd tailoring interactions to their preferences or tasks at hand.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that this upgrade was driven by user feedback, particularly from those seeking faster response times without sacrificing the quality of answers.
