Apple Intelligence Rolls Out in India with New Features

Apple began rolling out the iOS 18.4 update, finally bringing Apple Intelligence features to users in India. The features were previously limited to users in the US, UK, Europe, and Canada, but the latest update expands availability to more regions, with support for additional languages, including localised English for India and Singapore, as well as French, German, Italian, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese.
That stated, not all iPhones are eligible for the AI-powered tools. Apple Intelligence will only be available on the iPhone 16 series including iPhone 16e, iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. For those with an eligible device, updating to iOS 18.4 will unlock several Apple Intelligence features, including Writing Tools, Smart Reply, Clean Up, and Genmoji. Apple initially announced Apple Intelligence at WWDC 2024, and while many expected it to roll out alongside the iPhone 16 launch last year, the company took more time to refine the experience. Now, nearly a year later, users in India can finally access these AI-driven capabilities.
If you own a compatible iPhone, you can update to iOS 18.4 by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Since Apple rolls out updates in phases, it may take a few hours or days for all users to see the update. If you don’t see it immediately, checking back later should do the trick.
Apple Intelligence adds several new tools designed to enhance productivity and creativity. Writing Tools, for example, can rewrite, proofread, and summarize text across apps like Mail, Messages, Notes, and even third-party apps. Smart Reply offers quick response suggestions, and multilingual users can take advantage of AI-driven language adaptation.
Clean Up lets users remove unwanted objects from images, while Image Playground allows for the easy creation of customized images. Genmoji takes emoji use to the next level by letting users generate personalized emoji based on descriptions or photos. The Photos app also gets upgrades, including natural language search, which allows users to find specific photos or video moments by describing them in plain language. The Memories feature can now generate video montages based on user descriptions.
Visual Intelligence: Your iPhone can now identify objects around you
One of the most interesting additions is Visual Intelligence, which lets users point their iPhone camera at an object to get more information about it. For example, pointing the camera at a flower will reveal details such as its name, ideal growing conditions, and whether it can be replanted. On the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro models, Visual Intelligence can be triggered using the Capture button. On the iPhone 16e, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max, long-pressing the Action button will activate the feature.
System-wide support for Indian languages
In addition to AI-powered tools, Apple recently announced system-wide support for 10 Indian languages, including Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, and Marathi, for the iPhone 16e and other iPhone 16 models. This means users can not only type and chat in their preferred language but also see system settings, including the Calendar, Settings app, and lock screen date and time, in their chosen language.
Smarter Siri, better notifications, and ChatGPT integration
The update also improves Siri, making it more conversational and allowing users to switch between text and voice inputs. Siri can now retain context across multiple queries and answer detailed questions about Apple device settings and features. Apple has also integrated ChatGPT into Siri and Writing Tools, enabling users to generate content, get image descriptions, and analyses documents without switching between apps. ChatGPT access is optional, and Apple assures users that privacy is maintained, with no data storage or tracking unless an account is connected.
Notification management has been refined with Priority Notifications that highlight important messages, while the Reduce Interruptions mode filters out non-essential alerts. The Notes and Phone apps now support transcription and summarization for audio recordings, helping users quickly review key points from calls or voice memos.
