Li-Fi: New Technology Faster than Wi-Fi
BANGALORE: Ever wished for faster Wi-Fi than what we have? Well, Li-Fi is the answer; it has an ability to send data up to 1GBps, reports IE. Li-Fi is almost 100 folds better than the contemporary Wi-Fi technology.
Wondering what is Li-Fi? Much like Wi-Fi, Li-Fi depends on light to beam data wirelessly. Discovered by Professor Harald Hass of the University of Edinburgh, Li-Fi was first developed in 2011.Professor Hass told IBTimes UK, “While LiFi may not completely replace WiFi, the technologies could be used in parallel to create more efficient networks.”
According to Velmenni CEO Deepak Solanki, Li-Fi will reach the market by next three to four years from now, also reported by IBTimes UK.
Professor Hass appeared on TED talks in 2011, where he spoke about the Li-Fi and the same video on YouTube has received more than 1.7million views.
Hass quotes, “All we need to do is fit a small microchip to every potential illumination device and this would then combine two basic functionalities: illumination and wireless data transmission.” He adds, “In the future we will not only have 14 billion light bulbs, we may have 14 billion Li-Fis deployed worldwide for a cleaner, greener and even brighter future.”
However, the research on Li-Fi technology is not only done by Professor Hass but a team of researchers from Oxford University too. . A report on Telegraph emphasized that the new Li-Fi technology, will be difficult to make it work. Because, the light beam has no ‘guide path’ like the radio waves, so there will be conflict while receiving the signal.
