Watch Out Google! Facebook Is Building Its Own Search Engine

BANGALORE: Speculators think that Facebook could be well on its way to launching a search engine of its own. This move will help people share articles with their friends alongside status updates.

As of now, users must paste the URL of the article they wish to share inside the box. However, the new update for   Facebook, which is seen in some iOS devices, gives the user an option called ‘add a link’ that allows them to search for articles to share.

When a user clicks on an option, it displays a search bar into which people can type their question. The results that appear are sorted by their likelihood of being shared: articles which have been recently published and articles posted by other users in their friend group will be given a higher priority.

Initially, the feature will only be active on the iOS platform, but the company recently told technology news website Techcrunch that it is keen on "piloting a new way to add a link that's been shared on Facebook to your posts and comments".

Facebook has announced that it has already indexed more than a trillion user posts to build the engine and compiled algorithms to determine which articles  were most shared.

Social search is Facebook’s trump card over Google, which does  not have access to how data is shared from person to person.

Increasing the amount of traffic content publishes receive from Facebook means that publishers are encouraged to keep up active postings and followings on the site as well as occasionally buy ads to promote their brand.
