WhatsApp Tests Multi-Account Support and Usernames in Major Upgrade
  • WhatsApp tests multi-account support on iPhone
  • Users can switch profiles without a second device
  • App prepares for usernames as part of a wider identity update

WhatsApp is preparing one of its biggest usability upgrades in years, with the messaging platform now testing native multi-account support and early groundwork for usernames. The features have started appearing in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS through TestFlight, giving selected users a first look at what’s coming next.

According to WABetaInfo, some beta testers now see a new 'Account List' section in the app’s settings or a shortcut next to the QR code button. This menu allows users to add a second WhatsApp account directly on the same iPhone, something that previously required the WhatsApp Business app or other workarounds. The beta currently supports up to two accounts.

Users can set up the second profile with a new phone number, an existing account from WhatsApp Business, or even link a companion device by scanning a QR code. Once linked, chats, messages and settings sync automatically to the main phone, offering a smooth multi-profile experience.

Each account remains completely independent, with its own chat history, backups, privacy settings and notification sounds. Notifications will also clearly show which account received the message, reducing confusion for users juggling work and personal conversations.

WhatsApp is also building the foundation for usernames, a shift that suggests the app may soon allow identity beyond phone numbers. While usernames are still in early development, the feature could redesign how people discover or connect with each other on the platform.

WhatsApp hasn’t announced a public release date, but the advanced state of testing indicates the update may not be far away. Together, multi-account support and usernames signal a major step toward making WhatsApp more flexible and user-friendly.
