Want A Selfie In Space? Just Pay 50,000

BANGALORE: Now that the selfie phenomenon is a craze among youngsters with snaps being shared widely on social media, now taking Selfie Fanaticism a Level Higher, Literally, reports Times of India.

Two former engineering students from the University of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, Alex Baker and Chris Rose, use a digital camera, some off-cuts of foam and a giant helium balloon that goes 37 km up into near space.

Space selfies can be dated back to 1976, but now with the help of these two former engineers you can get it done for just Rs 50,000.

All they require is a prototype balloon, which can be fitted with a camera that can beam back images of the Earth's stratosphere. They have also sent people's photographs, diamond ring, toy cars and front pages of newspapers.

They are now providing Do-It-Yourself kit for customers to launch their own space balloons. A GPS tracking system is included to collect the payloads after they land. They use wind charts and meteorological data to predict the landing. They have even talked to a funeral home about sending ashes into space.

Recently they sent their hundredth balloon, Rose said, "We don't actually have a background in space, but after a few too many ales in the student union we had the idea it would be fun to put a camera on a weather balloon and track it."

They even provide all the documents for permission to launch from the Civil Aviation Authority.
