Vedanta's $1.5Billion push into Tech-grade Metals

In short
- On National Technology Day, Vedanta Limited announced a $1.5 billion investment to enhance its production
- This expansion will increase the share of value-added products in Vedanta's aluminium business to over 90%,
- The company is also exploring strategic minerals like nickel and cobalt in mineral-rich states to align with the government's mineral security initiatives.
On National Technology Day, Vedanta Limited declared a $1.5 billion thrust towards increasing its value-added aluminium and zinc products to fuel India's technology and engineering industries.
Vedanta Limited reaffirmed its pledge to upgrade India's engineering and technology capabilities by scaling up production of value-added metals and energy transition products.
Vedanta, India's largest aluminium and zinc producer, has made several announcements to boost its production of high-end, application-ready metals required for emerging technologies. The investment, underpinning smelting and value-added production of aluminium at Vedanta's main plants, is a result of a commitment of $1.5 billion to expand its capacity. Post this expansion, the share of value-added products in Vedanta's aluminium business will be over 90% in the near future.
Vedanta's strategic growth occurs at a point in time when India's industrial and digital economy are increasingly reliant on critical and transition metals. The firm is a contact producer of four of the world's most utilized metals (aluminium, zinc, copper, iron), all of which play central roles in the world of infrastructure, electronics, energy systems, and emerging technology uses (e.g., AI, EVs, renewable energy systems, advanced manufacturing).
"Metals are the backbone of modern innovation," the firm said, while also announcing its expanding presence in strategic minerals like nickel, cobalt, vanadium, and PGEs. Exploration efforts are already underway in India's mineral-rich states of Rajasthan, Bihar, and Karnataka, in line with the government's mineral security paradigm.
