Sundar Pichai's Google Launches AI Search Mode in India

- Google rolls out ‘AI Mode’ in Search for Indian users, starting with English, following overwhelming response from initial Labs testing.
- Powered by Gemini 2.5, the new AI Mode offers smart, intuitive answers to complex queries via text, voice, or images.
- Feature now live without sign-up, with a dedicated AI tab in Google Search and app, aiming to transform how Indians interact with the web.
Google has now officially rolled out its highly awaited 'AI Mode' in Search to users in India, after CEO Sundar Pichai reported an 'incredible response' to the initial test phase in Labs. In a post on X, Pichai revealed that the feature is now live to users in India, beginning with English, and represents a fundamental rethinking of the classic Google Search experience.
The new AI Mode is intended to enable web searches to be more instinctive and intelligent using a tailored version of Gemini 2.5, the best model in Google's Gemini AI lineage. This enables people to pose intricate, subtle questions and get thorough, tailored answers at once, without needing to narrow down queries or conduct successive searches. For instance, rather than dissecting a question into various components, a user can now type, "My children are of a certain age, energetic. How do I get them active indoors on hot days without using toys or taking up much space".
AI Mode comprehends the layers of such a question and gives a customized, holistic answer. Hema Budaraju, Google's Vice President of Product Management for Search, posted more information in a July 8 blog entry. She explained that the AI Mode was initially made available to Indian users in a limited Labs experiment in June. Users no longer need to sign up for Labs to use the feature, however.
In the next few days, AI Mode users in India will start noticing a separate tab for AI Mode in Google Search, as well as the search bar of the Google app.
AI Mode supports a variety of input types, such as text, voice, and pictures using Google Lens. This allows users to engage more naturally with Search and drill down on topics using follow-up questions and rich responses complete with useful links. Budaraju noted that the experience is designed to assist users in satisfying their curiosity and learning more about the world around them in a unified, AI-driven way.
