Google CEO Sundar Pichai has described artificial intelligence (AI) as a 'fundamental rewiring of technology' and an 'accelerant of human ingenuity' during a major AI summit in France. Addressing world leaders and industry figures, Pichai emphasized that while AI is still in its early stages, its transformative impact will be the most significant of this generation.
"We're still in the early days of the AI platform shift, and yet we know it will be the biggest of our lifetimes", Pichai said, according to excerpts from his speech released ahead of the event.
Highlighting AI’s real-world benefits, he cited its role in early wildfire detection through satellite imagery. Pichai also announced a partnership with Paris-based Institut Curie to enhance AI-powered cancer detection and treatment, reinforcing AI’s potential in critical areas like healthcare.
The summit also saw key tech leaders, including Demis Hassabis, head of Google's DeepMind AI research lab, speaking at Google's Paris offices. A Nobel laureate, Hassabis underscored that AI is changing various scientific disciplines. "Material science, mathematics, fusion—there is almost no area of science that won't benefit from these AI tools", he said.
Google reaffirmed its commitment to AI development, with Pichai confirming a $75 billion investment this year, primarily for AI-driven projects. He stressed the importance of democratizing AI access to prevent a growing 'AI divide', ensuring that technology benefits all, rather than widening societal disparities.
While concerns over AI’s societal impact persist, Pichai urged policymakers to focus on long-term opportunities rather than short-term fears. “Every generation worries that new technology will change the lives of the next generation for the worse and yet it’s almost always the opposite”, he remarked.
Calling AI a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity', Pichai concluded with a vision of harnessing AI at scale to drive innovation and improve human lives globally.
