WhoSampled integration powers deeper track insights
Spotify has introduced a fresh set of features designed to help listeners explore the creative work, people, and stories behind their favorite songs. Announced on Wednesday, the updates highlight producers, engineers, songwriters, background vocalists, and even the history of how tracks are sampled, covered, or connected across genres.
A major part of this rollout is SongDNA, an interactive tool that gives users a deeper look at any track. It shows which songs were sampled, who has covered the track, and what other projects the credited artists have contributed to. TechCrunch first spotted signs of SongDNA earlier this year when reverse engineer Jane Manchun Wong found references to it in Spotify’s code. SongDNA expands the current Song Credits feature, which only displays basic performance and production credits.
These richer insights are powered by WhoSampled, the community-driven database that Spotify recently acquired. While platforms like TIDAL also offer detailed credits, Spotify aims to combine contributor histories, sampling data, and related track connections into a unified discovery experience.
Spotify is also preparing About the Song, a feature that appears as swipeable cards in the Now Playing view. These cards reveal the inspiration behind a track, cultural context, and links to external sources such as Wikipedia and news outlets. This approach builds on earlier experiments like the company’s collaboration with Genius for lyric-based stories.

Updated Song Credits are rolling out on mobile starting Wednesday and will reach desktop soon. SongDNA and About the Song will launch early next year exclusively for Premium users through the Spotify for Artists Preview program. Artists and collaborators can review and correct their credits before the wider release.
