OpenAI Eyes India as Its Next Biggest Market with GPT-5 Launch and Education Drive
  • OpenAI names India its second-largest market and aims to make it the biggest soon, focusing on accessibility and affordability.
  • Launch of GPT-5 offers advanced AI capabilities with smart reasoning, available to all users with enhanced features for subscribers.
  • Partnership with IndiaAI mission introduces ‘OpenAI Academy India’ to expand AI skills training across diverse learners nationwide.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has identified India as the company’s second-largest market globally, trailing only the United States, with strong potential to become its biggest market in the near future. Speaking at the launch of GPT-5, the latest iteration of OpenAI’s cutting-edge artificial intelligence system powering ChatGPT, Altman praised the rapid growth and innovative use of AI by Indian users.
“It’s incredibly fast-growing, but what users are doing with AI, what citizens of India are doing with AI, is really quite remarkable”, Altman said, emphasizing OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing AI accessibility and affordability across the country. To that end, the company is collaborating with local partners to tailor its products to meet the unique needs of Indian users. Altman also announced plans to visit India in September to further strengthen these partnerships.
Earlier in June, OpenAI partnered with the Indian government’s IndiaAI mission to launch ‘OpenAI Academy India’ the company’s first international expansion of its AI education platform. The initiative is designed to widen access to AI skills training throughout India, supporting a diverse range of learners including students, developers, educators, civil servants, nonprofit leaders, and small business owners. This program aligns with the IndiaAI Mission’s ‘FutureSkills’ pillar, tapping into India’s burgeoning developer community, digital infrastructure, and vibrant startup ecosystem.
Jason Kwon, Chief Strategy Officer at OpenAI, described India as “one of the most dynamic countries in the world for AI development, with adoption and innovation accelerating at remarkable speed”.
GPT-5 itself marks a significant leap in AI capabilities, consolidating the best features of ChatGPT into a single, unified experience designed to deliver expert-level responses across a broad range of areas such as coding, mathematics, writing, health, and visual perception. OpenAI describes GPT-5 as a smart system capable of quickly deciding when to provide immediate answers and when to engage deeper reasoning for complex problems.
The system is accessible to all users, with enhanced benefits for Plus and Pro subscribers the latter gaining access to GPT-5 Pro, a version with extended reasoning power for more comprehensive and accurate responses.
By combining robust AI advancements with localized education efforts, OpenAI aims to accelerate AI adoption and innovation in India, positioning the country as a vital hub in the global AI landscape.
