Om Prakash: Art to Evoke Technology
“Art challenges technology, and technology inspires art.” John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer, Pixar Animation Studios, proclaimed this mantra.
Great achievers in technology are always known to have derived inspiration from something far ‘less technical’, yet enigmatic. Renowned physicist, Robert Lang is known for interweaving mathematical formulae into paper folding techniques. Computational origami is said to have astounding potential for space science, and robotics. NASA has been using foldable solar arrays, which utilize geometrical planning and engineering of the design, so as to minimize its cubic space on a spacecraft.
A more vivid example is the viral smartphone app, Prisma that enjoys over 10.6 million downloads on iOS, with 1.55 million daily active users globally. Upon taking the tarps off his brainchild project that heavily infuses Artificial Intelligence algorithms to bring impressionist-style brush strokes to ‘selfies’ and sceneries, Alexey Moiseenkov, CEO, Prisma, concurred with the fact that “Deep learning is like an artist.”
Piquing the curiosity of many such tech entrepreneurs and protégés for over sixty years is prominent Indian artist and teacher, Om Prakash. This September, the Marin Community Foundation will be hosting his exhibition, “Om Prakash: Intuitive Nature, Paintings from 2004-2015,” featuring eighty paintings and eight drawings. This will be the artist’s fifty-seventh solo exhibition, and the first monographic show of his work in the U.S.
