NPCI Launches Biometric Authentication for UPI Payments in India

- NPCI launches fingerprint and face unlock for UPI payments
- Aadhaar based facial verification simplifies UPI PIN setup
- UPI transactions coming soon to smart glasses for hands free payments
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), in partnership with the Reserve Bank of India, has introduced a new biometric based feature for UPI payments. Now, users can authenticate UPI transactions using their phone’s fingerprint sensor or face unlock instead of entering a UPI PIN. This option is voluntary and can be enabled by the user for added convenience and security.
Major UPI apps like PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, and BharatPe are expected to roll out this feature soon, making transactions faster and easier for millions across India.
In addition, NPCI has launched an Aadhaar based facial verification method for setting or resetting UPI PINs. Powered by UIDAI’s FaceRD app, this feature removes the need for debit card details or multiple OTPs, simplifying the onboarding process for new users.
Taking innovation a step further, NPCI announced that UPI payments will soon be accessible through smart glasses. Users will be able to complete small value transactions by scanning QR codes and confirming payments using voice commands, all without touching their phones or entering a PIN. This will enable secure, hands free payments in daily life.
