Telecom equipment behemoth Nokia is enhancing its 'Make in India' contribution by introducing up to 70% of its production from the nation to foreign countries. Tarun Chhabra, Senior Vice President and Country Head of Nokia India, unveiled that the exports of the company are between 30% and 70%, with exports last year reaching 50%, which were mainly radio equipment.
In a major announcement, Nokia shared its plans to support Vodafone Idea (Vi) with the latest 5G and 4G baseband and radio modules as the operator gears up for a phased 5G rollout in key markets. The company is also accelerating Vi’s 4G network expansion, adding new sites, upgrading technology, and expanding spectrum bandwidth to enhance service quality.
By March 2025, Nokia will roll out more than 60,000 technology sites and thousands of additional new 4G sites. Ultra-lean sites will also be rolled out to achieve optimal coverage in high-density urban environments.
"With the increasing demand for high-performance networks, our partnership with Vi will meet changing consumer and business requirements", Chhabra added. He pointed out Nokia's rapid deployment of 5G and 4G sites with Vi, highlighting their focus on enabling partners with the latest technology.
Nokia is leveraging its AirScale portfolio, including Multi Radio Access Technology (RAT) baseband units and energy-efficient 'ReefShark System-on-Chip' technology, to enhance coverage and capacity.
Jagbir Singh, CTO of Vodafone Idea, expressed confidence in Nokia’s rapid 4G expansion, stating that it would significantly improve Vi’s coverage and customer experience.
With strong export expansion and healthy domestic deployments, Nokia is well-positioned to be a key driver of India's telecom future, closing the nation's digital divide and enabling its shift to next-generation connectivity.
