BENGALURU: After a lucrative comeback, Motorola is looking forward to reset its manufacturing unit in India. Currently Motorola’s production plant at Chennai has not been used since 2013, after Google acquired it. After its return into Smartphone market, Motorola has sold more than three million Smartphones last year, as reported by Indiatimes.

India being Motorola’s one of the biggest markets globally, the company is keen to restart its manufacturing base in India. As the company also sees manufacturing Smartphones here is eleven percent cheaper than importing. Make in India project could also influence Motorola to resume its manufacturing unit.

Marcus Frost, Senior Marketing Director for Motorola Mobility's Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) as well as Asia-Pacific (APAC) regions said “India is one of the biggest markets for Motorola globally, and also among the fastest-growing. We have started evaluating on whether it makes sense to make in India."

"Going through the Chennai factory, or through a contract-manufacturing route, is something that is part of the evaluation." Frost added.          

Motorola, which was bought by Chinese tech giant Lenovo from Google in 2014, entered Indian market with successful E, G and X series Smartphones. Now the company is intended to join the 4G race, as it has unveiled the 3^rd generation Moto G phones with 4G connectivity, priced at Rs 11,999 (8GB) and  12,999 (16GB).

Other than Motorola, various other global tech companies like Sony from Japan and Xiaomi from China have also shown significant amount of interest to setup a production plant in India. Considering human resource to be the major factor, a Taiwan based Foxconn is already in process to set a unit in India.
