MeitY has launched the TruthTell Hackathon to prevent misinformation in live broadcasts, an initiative led by AI. Developers, data scientists, and media professionals will be challenged to design a fact-checking tool.
With a prize pool of Rs 10 lakh, winners will receive cash prizes, mentorship, and incubation opportunities from leading tech experts, fostering ethical AI use in journalism. So far, the initiative has received an overwhelming response, with over 5,600 global registrations, including 36% female participants, reflecting diverse interest in media integrity.
"The initiative is meant to address the acute issue of misinformation that spreads faster than ever in live broadcasts", MeitY said. The hackathon aims to arm the media professionals with real-time content verification capabilities powered by AI.
It is one of the flagship events of the inaugural World Audio Visual & Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025 and takes place in several rounds. Participants need to submit their prototypes by February 21, and final presentations will be on March 2025. The winners will be announced at WAVES Summit 2025.
The TruthTell Hackathon is a flagship initiative under the Create in India Challenge (CIC) Season 1, supported by MeitY, IndiaAI Mission, and DataLEADS. It speaks to the commitment of the government to use AI for media integrity, ensuring that audiences get correct and verified information.
