Meta Taps US Contractors to Develop Hindi AI Chatbots
  • Meta Hiring Abroad – Contractors in the US offered up to $55/hour to build Hindi AI chatbots.
  • Focus on Localisation – Roles target Hindi, Indonesian, Spanish, and Portuguese to make chatbots culturally relevant.
  • Rising Concerns – Past issues over privacy, inappropriate responses, and US lawmakers calling for stricter oversight.
Meta is reportedly hiring contractors in the United States to create Hindi-language AI chatbots for Indian users, offering pay of up to $55 (around Rs 4,850) per hour. The move is part of Meta’s larger strategy to expand its artificial intelligence presence in fast-growing markets like India, Indonesia, and Mexico, according to a report by Business Insider.
The report said that job listings reviewed by the publication show contractors are being hired through staffing firms such as Crystal Equation and Aquent Talent. The work mainly involves designing chatbot characters that will run across Meta platforms including Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp.
Candidates are required to be fluent in Hindi, Indonesian, Spanish, or Portuguese. They must also have at least six years of experience in areas like storytelling, character development, and working with AI content.
Meta has not officially confirmed the hiring, but Business Insider found that Crystal Equation had advertised roles for Hindi and Indonesian positions on behalf of Meta. Aquent Talent has also listed Spanish-language jobs for what it called a 'top social media company'.
The effort to hire contractors for localized chatbot roles highlights Meta’s plan to make digital companions that feel more culturally relevant to users in markets like India. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has earlier said that chatbots could help people connect more easily and even 'complement real-world friendships'.
However, Meta’s chatbot projects have also faced criticism. Past reports suggest that some chatbots engaged in inappropriate conversations with minors, shared wrong medical advice, and even produced racist remarks. Privacy concerns have also been raised after reports claimed that contractors reviewing chatbot conversations came across personal details like names, emails, phone numbers, and selfies.
These issues have led US lawmakers to call for tighter oversight of Meta’s AI practices.
