LG Energy Solution and Qualcomm Partner for BMS Diagnostic Tech

LG Energy Solution announced the availability of the company’s new system-on-chip (SoC)-based battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solutions. LG Energy Solution’s new advanced BMS software is available on the Snapdragon® Digital Chassis™ from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.

The two companies entered into a joint promotion agreement to accelerate the commercialization of SoC-based BMS diagnostic solutions.

The technology collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies builds on the companies’ working relationship where they announced earlier this year plans to develop a next-generation BMS diagnostic solution for electric vehicles and formed a technical consortium to advance their research. The BMS software will also integrate with the Snapdragon® Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform, enabling automakers to use the diagnostic solution for HMI and cloud services.

An LG Energy Solution spokesperson said, “Through the process of technology sharing and validation, we have demonstrated the excellence of our BMS technology through synergy with Qualcomm Technologies. Now, we are officially embarking on the development for commercialization”.

As part of the work with Qualcomm Technologies, LG Energy Solution has developed BMS software to integrate into the Snapdragon® Digital Chassis™. Unlike conventional BMS, which operated on low-spec hardware, this is the industry’s first implementation of a BMS solution leveraging high-performance SoC computing power.

LG Energy Solution’s unique safety diagnostics and degradation/lifespan prediction software, developed for the Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions, will enable a more sophisticated and differentiated BMS solution. The core function of the BMS solution – safety diagnostics – will be significantly enhanced. By leveraging high-capacity computing power from Snapdragon Digital Chassis solutions, the system can collect more data than conventional BMS, allowing for faster and more accurate detection of anomalies such as thermal incidents.

The degradation diagnostics will also be more refined, with compute power increasing over 80 times. This will implement complex algorithms that were not feasible with previous BMS, which could only handle simple calculations. New features will include the ability to predict battery residual capacity after a certain period and degradation performance indicators for specific battery components such as the anode and cathode.

Moreover, the advanced BMS diagnostic software can operate in real-time without requiring a separate server connection. This allows for vehicle data, such as driving information, to be analyzed and diagnosed within the vehicle itself.

Earlier this month, LG Energy Solution unveiled its corporate vision, identifying the expansion into software and services as one of its four mid-to-long-term business strategic goals. In line with this, LG Energy Solution recently launched its new brand, ‘B.around.’ B.around offers a comprehensive range of solutions that go beyond the capabilities of conventional BMS, integrating cloud and AI technologies for safety diagnostics, degradation/lifespan prediction software, and solutions for Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs).

With over 20 years of accumulated expertise in BMS design and data analysis, LG Energy Solution holds more than 8,000 patents related to BMS. The company boasts a safety diagnostic detection rate of over 90% and an industry-leading degradation diagnostic error rate of around 1%.

“It is very meaningful that we have opened the market for the industry’s first SoC-based BMS, which will be key to the electric vehicle era, together with a global automotive technology leader like Qualcomm Technologies”, said David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “We believe that many EVs will soon be able to experience differentiated customer value through our B.around brand”.

O.H. Kwon, senior vice president and president of Qualcomm APAC stated, “We are very pleased to collaborate with LG Energy Solution on the commercialization development of BMS diagnostic solutions for next-generation electric vehicles based on the technological capabilities of the Snapdragon Digital Chassis. Qualcomm is driving the acceleration of digital transformation in the automotive sector, and through this collaboration, we aim to innovate the way energy is utilized and managed in electric vehicles to achieve optimal safety”.
