Is India Ready For Mark Zuckerberg's 'Digital India' Initiative?

BANGALORE: The recent maiden visit of Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg brought a new dawn to the pro-internet interests of the Modi Government. Zuckerberg was in the country to speak at the Internet.org summit held in Delhi and later has an appointment with PM Modi.

In his Speech at the summit, Zuckerberg spoke about his interest to help India’s advancement with technology so that internet would penetrate the nook and corner of the country. He also shed light on his ideas about bringing affordable internet to the whole nation. He praised the pro-internet attitude of the present government and shed light on the plans of Facebook to bring in solar powered drones.

But with all this said there is a lot of skepticism to his appeals as it sounds like marketing strategies for Facebook as India is the second largest country that uses Facebook. Whatever be his intentions, whether for the profit of his company or the benefit of the people there are challenges that he will have to face for sure. Here are some of those challenges.

Internet penetration:

The idea of Internet penetration is one to be hailed. Imagine India with internet access from any part of town without disruption. This initiative is widely welcomed since the government is working towards it but is this really the need at the moment? Is internet penetration the answer to the million problems that grips this country? These are some questions that need to be answered.
