According to a statement issued by the Power Minister, India aspires to run completely on electric vehicles by 2030. While it is a great target as it will cut down emission considerably, it will also put tremendous pressure on India’s staggering power generation and distribution infrastructure. According to industry projections, India must increase its power production five-fold by 2035in order to meet the country’s domestic and industrial requirement. While the government is keen to project India as the next global manufacturing hub with its ‘make in India’ slogan, power generation and distributionremains one of the most glaring challenges the country faces. Power generation problems go hand in hand with power quality issues.

Power quality issues cause serious financial losses to low tech industries. An average manufacturing plant in India lost revenue by 5.6%, producer surplus by 9.5% and productivity by 1.5% in 2005 due to poor power quality, according to the Annual Survey of Industries.  A study published in the International Journal of Emerging Technology and Advanced Engineering confirms the aging power grid infrastructure and incompatibility between present load characteristics and electric power supply environment frequently lead to poor power quality. This results in significant losses in a wide range of industries, including financial, services, health care, high tech, and process manufacturing.
