India-Philippine Tech Summit Launches to Foster Digital Collaboration and Partnerships
India's Embassy in the Philippines inaugurated the first India-Philippine Tech Summit (IPTS) , aimed at bolstering technological and digital partnerships with Manila. Speaking at the IPTS in Taguig City, Indian Ambassador to Manila Shambhu Kumaran underscored the importance of developing collaborations among developing nations, particularly in security, people-to-people ties, and the economy.
Addressing the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI), Kumaran emphasized the necessity for partnerships, stating, "With the arrival of AI, there will be further changes. There is a need for a partnership. And the summit is the beginning of that partnership".
The event serves as a platform to bring Indian entrepreneurs and their success stories in the digital space to the Philippines, offering an opportunity for the latter to study, adopt, synergize, and cooperate with India, according to Kumaran.
The summit featured Indian 'unicorns'—privately-owned startup companies valued at over $1 billion—alongside startups in agriculture, healthcare, and financial technology (fintech), showcasing the diverse expertise of the Indian tech sector in the Philippines.
Secretary Ivan John Uy of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) affirmed the Philippine government's commitment to maintaining partnerships with the private sector. Uy revealed ongoing negotiations with the Indian government on agreements related to 'cybersecurity' and 'digital transformation.'
Describing the summit as a fitting renewal of cooperation and celebration of diplomatic ties, Uy emphasized its significance.
Organized by the DICT, the Philippines Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI), India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Meity), and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the one-day IPTS aimed to bring together stakeholders in the digital domain, fostering networking opportunities and exploring mutually beneficial government-to-business (G2B) and business-to-business (B2B) partnerships.
Around 300 participants from agriculture, healthcare, fintech, Philippine government agencies, businesses, angel investors, venture capital firms, and incubators were expected to attend the event. The Philippines has become a crucial partner for India in Southeast Asia, collaborating across various sectors, including defense, maritime security, and investments.
