India might surpass US on GitHub: Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella
According to Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella, India is projected to surpass the United States as the largest developer community on GitHub by 2027. Speaking at the Microsoft AI Tour in Bengaluru, Nadella emphasized that India is the fastest-growing market on GitHub, boasting 13.2 million developers. He also noted that, following the US, India holds the second-highest number of generative AI (artificial intelligence) projects on GitHub, underscoring the significant contribution of India's developer community in advancing innovative products and solutions.
Nadella expressed that the evolving landscape of AI is transforming the development process globally, including in India. He highlighted the positive impact of India's developer community in utilizing Microsoft's technology and tools to shape the future. Nadella announced the expansion of Microsoft's "Code; Without Barriers" program to India this month, with the goal of democratizing access to technology skills across the country. As part of this initiative, Microsoft aims to offer training and certification to 75,000 female developers in India by 2024. Launched in 2021 across nine Asia Pacific countries, the program seeks to address the gender gap in the rapidly growing sectors of cloud computing, artificial intelligence, and digital technology in the region.
Microsoft's expansion of the "Code; Without Barriers" initiative is part of the company's broader efforts to enhance developer skills in India. Satya Nadella announced a new skilling investment in the country, aiming to empower individuals and organizations for success in the era of artificial intelligence (AI). Through the ADVANTA(I)GE INDIA initiative, Microsoft plans to offer AI skilling opportunities to 2 million people in India by 2025. Earlier this year, Microsoft facilitated career advancement for 100,000 developers in AI through the "AI Odyssey" initiative, enabling participants to acquire new skills and earn Microsoft credentials. Following a positive response in India, Microsoft is extending the AI Odyssey program to additional Asian countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Korea, China, Vietnam, and Thailand.
