IIT Madras Commences CyStar: A Cybersecurity Innovation

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has unveiled a new Cyber Security Centre which aims to reinforce both basic and applied research to cultivate innovation in India. The Centre for Cyber security, Trust and Reliability (CyStar) will work on cutting-edge research in areas such as blockchain technology, AI-model security, cryptography, quantum security, and IoT security.

CyStar will spearhead research and education that extend into new dimensions of cybersecurity. Acknowledging the need for a multi-disciplined approach, the research team is constituted with a surplus of expertise, as outlined in a current press release.

The center means to collaborate nationally and internationally with academic institutions, industry, and research organizations, helping prepare students, practitioners, and researchers to be capable of properly addressing existing and future security challenges, thereby proposing a more secure virtual environment. Its initiatives will focus on targeted issues of security across financials, healthcare, automotive, and electronics Industries.

At the launch event, Prof. V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized that the country needs to make concerted efforts to evolve in a proactive approach for cybersecurity. Cybersecurity now aims to protect national infrastructure from increasing illegitimate cyber threats that are motivated not only by monetary gains but also by disturbing critical national infrastructure. He exulted that such initiatives are vital at this time.
