Google has unveiled Gemini CLI, a new open-source AI agent designed to bring its powerful Gemini model directly into developers' command-line interfaces. With capabilities in coding, content generation, research, and more, Gemini CLI marks a significant evolution in developer productivity tools.
Described as a “fundamental upgrade to your command line experience”, Gemini CLI provides lightweight, local access to Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro reasoning model, which supports a massive 1 million-token context window. This means developers can engage with complex, context-rich prompts and receive intelligent, AI-driven responses in real time.
While Gemini CLI is optimized for coding tasks such as writing, debugging, and problem-solving, Google emphasizes its versatility. It can also handle tasks like content generation, deep research, task management, and image and video creation through integration with Google's Veo and Imagen AI tools.
Gemini CLI comes integrated with Gemini Code Assist, features Model Context Protocol (MCP) for better prompt continuity, and supports Google Search for contextual information retrieval. The tool is available in preview starting today and can be accessed via a personal Google account through a free Gemini Code Assist license.
Google is offering a generous usage limit of 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day, which it claims is the 'largest allowance' among industry peers. However, the company has not yet disclosed future pricing or options for users who exceed these limits.
With its blend of powerful reasoning, flexible output formats, and industry-leading usage limits, Gemini CLI positions itself as a formidable competitor to other AI developer tools like GitHub Copilot, Anthropic’s Claude, and Microsoft’s Windows Terminal AI chatbot.
