Google Introduces New AI Initiatives to Strengthen Its Presence in India

Google announced a series of significant initiatives tailored for the Indian market, showcasing its commitment to the country. Key highlights include an open-source AI Agent Framework,’ expanded local data storage options, a digital public infrastructure (DPI) model, clean energy partnerships, and the establishment of a new Google Safety Engineering Center (GSEC) set to open next year.

Roma Datta Chobey, Managing Director of Google India, emphasized the deepening relationship between the tech giant and India as the nation increasingly embraces technology.

“We’re enhancing Gemini Live, the mobile conversation feature of the Gemini app, and expanding AI Overviews in Google Search to include more Indian languages,” she stated at the 10th edition of the ‘Google for India’ initiative.

The new AI tools will enable businesses to create engaging visuals and videos, update their online presence for a more immersive experience, and interact with customers through instant chat features integrated into their Google Search listings.

In an effort to expand access to credit, Google Pay is introducing new offerings tailored to meet the diverse needs of Indian users, including partnerships with Aditya Birla Finance Limited and Muthoot Finance for gold-backed loans.

“Beginning next year, users will also be able to access Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID Cards through the Google Wallet app, in collaboration with Eka Care,” the company announced.

The newly launched open-source AI Agent Framework in India is powered by the Gemini model. Regarding data sovereignty, organizations across various sectors will have the option to store data domestically and perform machine learning processes using the advanced Gemini 1.5 Flash model entirely within India.

Additionally, Google is rolling out "DPI in a Box" in partnership with the EkStep Foundation. This "plug-and-play" model utilizes open networks, Aadhaar, and Sovereign Cloud technology to enable other nations to develop their own robust digital public infrastructures.

To enhance protection for Android users against financial fraud, Google is set to pilot improved fraud protection measures within Google Play Protect in India. The company also plans to establish a new Google Safety Engineering Center (GSEC) in 2025.

Google revealed two new clean energy partnerships aimed at contributing 186 megawatts of renewable energy to the grid. Collaborations include working with CleanMax to harness wind and solar power in Karnataka and Rajasthan, as well as partnering with Adani Energy for a solar-wind hybrid plant in Gujarat.

Furthermore, the 'AI Skills House' initiative aims to provide AI training to 10 million Indians through easily accessible digital courses.
