Facebook Acquired Facial Image Analysis Firm FacioMetrics
BENGALURU: As part of Facebooks strategies to offer innovative features and special effects to photos and videos, the social media giant acquired a facial image analysis firm FacioMetrics. The financial and acquisition details were not disclosed by the company.
FacioMetrics was a startup that developed technology for face tracking and recognizing emotions. Facebook found several innovations with the technology from FacioMetrics, which lead to the acquisition. FacioMetrics was a spinoff of the Carnegie Mellon University in 2015, as a response to market demand surrounding use of facial image analysis. The company developed facial behavior and demographic tools for developers, using video. These tools aid facial detection and understanding, and also let users swap faces.
According to the company website, FacioMetrics was started to meet the interest and demand for facial image analysis with applications such as augmented and virtual reality, animation, and audience reaction measurement.
The social media giant has acquired companies in the past to enhance user’s photo and video capabilities. The acquisition of Masquerade Technologies in March also introduced technology to add special effects to faces in photos and videos in the Facebook platform. Now the new technology from FacioMetrics could assist developers in creating more realistic virtual experiences.
As part of the acquisition, all products of Faciometrics in the Google play store and Apple App store were removed.
