BENGALURU: Ever wondered if your Wi-Fi router could just become smarter and work only when you need it? This technology revolution could be right around the corner! Young Indian researchers Deepak Vasisht, and Swarun Kumar, along with research lead, Professor Dina Katabi may have found a Wi-Fi system that could bid goodbye to passwords, reports techtimes.com.  Coupled with the next-gen safer drone technology, this new innovation that was conceived in MIT’s (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence lab (CSAIL) can transform a normal home into a smart-home.

The new wireless technology, labeled Chronos features a single Wi-Fi access point that can detect humans within a radius of 10 centimeters. Without the support of additional sensors, Chronos utilizes the Wi-Fi frequency to gauge the number of people in a room. Sensing the crowd in a room, Chronos can automatically adjust the room’s heating or cooling systems, and can also zero in on someone's coordinates, 20 times more accurately than current norms.

In a demo conducted by the research team in a two-bedroom apartment, with four members, Chronos was accurate in identifying which room a resident was in with a precision rate of 94 percent. In another experiment performed in a public cafe, Chronos was able to distinguish in-store customers from out-of-store, which means storeowners can now sleep peacefully without having to worry about Internet theft.

The drones that come along as a package have a safe-distance of four centimeters, which ensure zero interference. In a place where planting sensors and other equipment becomes impractical or impossible—like searching for lost items—drone technology will be providing the answer  and Chronos, the means to do it. The enthused research team had stated that Chronos will be a harbinger of implementing Wi-Fi in robotics. The team would be developing drones that are safer for people to be around and useful in tracking family members inside their house.
