C-DOT Partners with IIT Roorkee and IIT Mandi to Boost 6G Standardisation and Connectivity
The Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT), a premier telecom R&D centre under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), has signed an agreement with IIT Roorkee and IIT Mandi to advance 6G standardisation and enhance connectivity in India.
This agreement, a pivotal step towards developing indigenous technology, is part of the Telecom Technology Development Fund (TTDF) scheme of the DoT. The collaboration aims to develop ‘Cell-Free’ 6G access points, a novel approach in mobile networks.
Unlike traditional mobile networks where each cell is serviced by a single base station, the 'Cell-Free' massive MIMO (multiple-input and multiple-output) technology eliminates cells and cell boundaries. Instead, it deploys several access points (APs) across a vast region to serve multiple user devices simultaneously. According to the Ministry of Communications, this will provide ubiquitous connectivity, eliminate dead zones, and enhance signal strength.
The Ministry highlighted that this innovation will significantly boost data speeds and offer an exceptional user experience even in densely populated areas. The 6G project will focus on developing APs for the upcoming 6G radio access networks and aims to contribute to the 6G standardisation activity.
Additionally, the project will drive commercialisation, generate intellectual property rights (IPRs), and develop a skilled workforce to support the emerging 6G landscape.
Rajkumar Upadhyay, CEO of C-DOT, emphasized the importance of indigenously designed and developed technologies in meeting specific communication requirements. "This will help us generate IPRs in the 6G domain and emerging technologies", he stated.
This partnership marks a significant move towards bolstering India's position in the global 6G race, fostering innovation, and enhancing the country's telecom infrastructure.
