AI Can Fill Gaps Left by Public Sector Cuts, Says Elon Musk

Elon Musk referred to the US government as inefficient and stated that artificial intelligence could be utilized to automate the tasks presently performed by some government employees, said a person who was present at the closed-door meeting at the Milken Institute Global Conference.

During a broad-ranging discussion on Sunday with financier Michael Milken, Musk also discussed his brain-implant venture, Neuralink, and work at SpaceX, said the person.

Musk made the remarks as he gets set to close out his tenure heading up the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE the signature Trump administration initiative designed to reduce the federal workforce, save money, and dismantle agencies such as the US Agency for International Development. Musk, the wealthiest person in the world, has indicated in recent weeks that his DOGE work is almost finished.

The CEO of Tesla is being squeezed more to concentrate on the electric car company as sales soften and investors' worries grow that his divided loyalties harm the company. During a recent earnings conference call, Musk committed to giving many more of his hours to Tesla starting in May.

Now in its 28th year, the Milken conference hosts leading financial figures, policymakers and celebrities in Beverly Hills to examine the interface between business and international challenges. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to launch the sessions on Monday with a presentation on global capital markets.
