Whatsapp Dominates SMS Services With 50 Percent Higher Volume

BENGALURU: The advent of messenger applications simply resulted in the demise of the traditional short message services. It is all the more evident from the data collected since 2011 which shows prominent decline in the figures. WhatsApp is now used to deliver 50 percent more messages each day than the traditional SMS service. And WhatsApp of all the messenger applications emerged as the king app that appeals to the majority of the population.

Jan Koum, CEO of WhatsApp was proud to announce their record results recently. The company anticipates further growth in its message volumes citing the 30 billion daily messages compared to the 20 billion SMS sent daily. WhatsApp now has booty worth 700 million monthly active users and processes 347,222 messages every second, thus further widening the sizeable gap between WhatsApp and texting.

Koum has written on his Facebook page “As humbled and excited as we are by these numbers and our continued growth, we’re even more excited to keep building a great product in 2015.”

It is clear that WhatsApp literally replaced SMS in all ways possible. And the revolutionary SMS services are endangered and are in their last phase. Ofcom data reveals that the SMS is heading in the other direction, seeing an 8.7 percent drop in messages sent in 2013. However despite the exponential growth of the WhatsApp platform, one cannot ignore its elite competitors. Although it remains the world’s largest instant messaging app, it has a competitor in Facebook Messenger as the latter has approximately 500 million users. Given the fact that WhatsApp is owned by Facebook, both of them merging together in future cannot be ruled out!

The other emerging competitor to WhatsApp is WeChat which is a big hit in the Chinese and Asian markets. Therefore WhatsApp is seen to have certain competitors based on popular geographic locations. Apple did not reveal the user numbers of iMessage service, so it cannot be compared to any of the others. With over 400 millions iPhones, it is hard to predict how big it is.

Others like Viber, Line and Hike are steadily adding new users to their messaging platform.
