WhatsApp's New 'Status' Tab is Under Testing

BENGALURU: WhatsApp, owned by Facebook is constantly updating its messaging platform with new features. Currently, WhatsApp is testing its new interface with ‘Status’ tab. This tab is present ever since the WhatsApp was launched in 2009. The new update includes a feature that allows you to share images with your contacts for a specific period of time, which is very similar to Instagram and Snapchat. The new ‘status’ tab will be added along with the old ‘status’ tab in the Menu Settings.

Facebook being the owner of both WhatsApp and Instagram has introduced similar feature in both the applications. Previously, Facebook-owned WhatsApp introduced a new video-strategy that could be used to capture and share videos among people without coming out of WhatsApp. As of now, the functionality is not disclosed openly in the new updated version of WhatsApp for Android and iOS devices. In order to enable the hidden functionality, user need to possess Android or jail broken iOS device. WhatsApp is currently aiming to boost User Interface by testing feature and feedback at a wider-level.

How does the updated ‘Status’ tab feature work?

As you enter into settings, status tab, app asks you to set the ‘Status recipients’. Subsequently, when you are done with the initial set up, you can edit the status recipients by clicking on the three dots at the top right corner of the app. Earlier, to add a new status you had to tap on the edit sign on the top right options in the ‘Status’ tab. However, now, the ‘Status’ option has been moved under settings. In addition, upon clicking the photo or video-recording option, preview screen is popped up, where user can crop the video and insert emoji’s, text overlays, and doodle using the pencil tool on the image or video. Importantly, with this new feature, you can set a status that everyone can see, and can also select the recipients who can read the content you share.

The latest feature eliminates the need of going to individual chat to send the media files. Now, when you click on the app, there is a camera option right in front that will allow you to click photos and videos, and share it with friends. There is one factor to observe that there is no direct way to delete the ‘Status’ images or videos shared in the ‘Status’ tab. As of now there is no option to set the timing for your photos and videos like the one in Snapchat, but you can expect it in future since the app is still in beta testing stage.
